Anthracite Heritage of the Arts

The Anthracite Heritage Festival of the Arts will be held on May 23rd from 6-10 and May 24th from 9-4 on Market St. in Shamokin, PA 17872.

The Festival originated three years ago when the Northumberland County Council for the Arts and Humanities saw the heritage history slipping away in their area. Rich in coal mining and textile industries the Council also realized that the building they called home, which was the former Shamokin Area High School, was of much interest to alumni visiting the town on Memorial Day weekend. Coming home to their roots with nothing to reconnect with was sad, thus the Festival was born.

The festival was started with 12 people under the direction of Jeanne Shaffer Arts Council director. It was always a dream to make the town come alive again even if it were only for a weekend. An event that appealed to all ages, and was family oriented where neighbors, friends and visitors could all mingle.

Friday night was added the second year as a kick off for Saturday. At 6 p.m. the Cameron Colliery whistle blows and the festivities start with a parade down Independence St. and onto Market, where entertainment awaits. This year Sham a lama will play the “oldies”. A luminary memorial will take place at dark and the night will end with fireworks.

Saturday at 9 a.m. the Cameron Colliery whistle blows and the National Anthem is sung. An ecumenical service is given along with a welcome and God Bless America.

The first stop for any visitor is booth #17 for information and a booklet of events and maps.

Among the happenings are horse drawn carriage tours, trolley rides, cemetery tours, historical church tours, and classic car show.

Across town on Independence St. above the library you can see a miniature train display and military display. Around the corner a Fireman’s museum will welcome visitors.

The Amazing Race starts at noon where 20 teams comb the town for clues relating to our history to go on to the next clue and eventually win the race. There will be detours, roadblocks and pit stops.

Entertainment is provided on stage all day including a magic show, Ray Owen rendition of ”Hats off to America,” a local talent show, Sadie Green Sales Jug Band and Moyers Dance Studio. A marionette show will be presented on the fourth park plot in the afternoon.

The Arts Center located on the hill of 8th & Arch St's houses a studio with a miniature coal breaker, art and “Shamokin, My Hometown” books of photos. In the gallery the News Item will exhibit photography ‘Work the Black Seam “a display of Welch Art Studio will adorn the halls.

Second level of the Arts Center will exhibit the Posca Photos and also display and act out the original control room of WISL the former radio station in the area. The auditorium will show non stop movies of old parades.

Panhandlers, Victorian High wheelers, coal miners and others will be roaming the streets and mingling with the crowds. The smell of ethnic food will permeate the air and 96 vendors and artisans will line Market St. for 3 blocks. Children’s clothesline art will be hung in the air and displays will be seen in store and bank windows.

It is a weekend that is talked about for a long time and anticipated all year. An event that has instilled much pride in who we are where we came from!

Laughter is Incorruptible at BTE!

The Bloomsburg Theatre Ensemble brings the work of a favorite playwright back to the Alvina Krause Theatre in downtown Bloomsburg this Spring when it presents Michael Hollinger’s madcap comedy Incorruptible for three weeks only, May 1 through 18, 2008. An assistant professor of theatre at Villanova University and a resident playwright at New Dramatists, Michael Hollinger also wrote the BTE hits Red Herring and Opus, which were also performed at the Alvina Krause Theatre.

Incorruptible is the fourth show in BTE's miraculous 30th anniversary season and will be presented for just three weeks, with only twelve performances scheduled between May 1 and 18, 2008. Two reduced price previews are offered on Thursday, May 1 and Friday, May 2
at 7PM.

Incorruptible is a light comedy of the dark ages! When the monks at a medieval monastery hit a financial crisis, they have to decide whether to call it quits or do something drastic. With the help of a mischievous one eyed minstrel named Jack and his wife Marie, the monks come up with a plan that’s too zany not to work.

Father Charles has to decide if it’s all still worth it when a gang of rival nuns threatens to expose the monk’s scheme, or worse, steal the secret weapon for themselves. Andrew Hubatsek and Cassandra Pisieczko play Jack and Marie, the minstrels; James Goode plays Charles, the abbot of the monastery.

Brother Martin, Brother Olf, and Brother Felix are played by Daniel Roth, Gerard Stropnicky and first-time BTE guest actor, Christopher Kamenstein. Laurie McCants plays the Peasant Woman, and Elizabeth Dowd plays Agatha, the Abbes of Bernay. Incorruptible is directed by Associate Ensemble Member Martin Shell, who last directed at BTE with Hollinger's Red Herring in 2004 . The production team is comprised of lighting designer A.C. Hickox, who has designed many shows at BTE including Letters to the Editor, Noises Off! and four productions of A Christmas Carol; and making their BTE debuts, set designer Adrian W. Jones and costume designer Gregory Trochlil.

Incorruptible runs May 1 through 18, 2008. Performances are Thursdays at 7:00PM, Fridays and Saturdays at 8:00PM, and Sundays at 3:00PM, with two reduced price previews Thursday May 1 and Friday May 2, 2008 at 7:00PM.

Tickets are: $23.00 for adults, $15.00 for seniors age 60 and over, $10.00 for students, and $4.00 for Bloomsburg University students with a valid I.D. Previews are $10.00, all seats. Incorruptible is sponsored by First Keystone Bank, and BTE's 30th Season sponsors, WNEP and the Press Enterprise.

Founded in 1978, the Bloomsburg Theatre Ensemble is celebrating its 30th season of bringing quality entertainment to Northeastern Pennsylvania. The Millbrook Playhouse

The Millbrook Playhouse is a unique barn theatre, having operated as a professional summer stock theatre since 1963. After the conversion from dairy barn to theatrical space, the Millbrook Playhouse began its 45 year history with the productions Born Yesterday, Calculated Risk, Come Blow Your Horn, Hobson's Choice, Inherit the Wind, Pleasure of His Company, Shot in the Dark and Time Limit.

Utilizing only one space at the barn, the hay-loft, for all of the productions, proved to be not enough for the patrons of the playhouse. In 1979 the Cabaret Theatre was introduced in the old milk-room. This intimate space boasts a close relationship with the audience and the actor that is very hard to come by in the theatrical world. The Cabaret Theatre offers a table and chair type setting, and invites parties, groups and individuals to come see a show and bring your dinner.

Though just a small professional theatre in the heart of central Pennsylvania, Millbrook Playhouse has been the starting point of some notable careers.

Millbrook Alum has starred in featured films such as Dune, Twin Peaks, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and on Television Series' such as Desperate Housewives, Eli Stone and LA Law. Millbrook takes pride in the fact that they have seen so many careers blossom from within the walls of the playhouse. The theatrical companies hired each summer continue to possess highly diverse skills and techniques and provide varied entertainment. More than 350 productions have been produced in the barn entertaining more than 1,000 people per week.

The Millbrook Playhouse is pleased to be producing its 45th season and proud to continue its tradition of bringing quality theatre entertainment to Clinton County and its surrounding areas. This year we will be featuring four family-friendly musicals on our Main Stage and four entertaining comedies in our intimate Cabaret Theatre. We will kick off the season with the Main Stage production of Annie Get Your Gun on June 12 (June 12 - June 22). Also playing will be The Taffetas (June 26 - July 6), Bye Bye Birdie (July 10 - July 20), and Altar Boyz (July 24 - August 3), and in the Cabaret we have The Foreigner (June 19 - June 29), Rebound and Gagged (July 3 - July 13), Sylvia (July 17 - July 27), and Educating Rita (July 31 - August 10).

We will also be continuing our Saturday Children's Theatre Productions. These shows include The Top Job and A (Tooth) Fairy Tale and are still only $5 for adults and children and begin Saturday June 28th at 11:00am.

The summer will conclude with our very popular Summer Theatre Camp slated for August 4 through August 8. The cost is $125 per child, and there will be a performance on August 9 for family and friends of our campers.

This summer proves to be one of our best yet, and we are very excited to be producing it. Showtimes are Wednesday through Saturday at 8pm, Sunday's at 7pm, and selected Matinees begin at 2pm. Tickets are $18 for Adults, $10 for Students, and $8 for Children, and are available by calling our box office at 570-748-8083, or by visiting www.millbrookplayhouse.com.
